Summer 2007, Volume 3

Poetry by Peter Basson

All Over You

I float through air
a mote of dust that lands
and clings to your hair
caught and trapped by your
irresistible attraction

Invisible micro-dot of pollen
alight on the tip of your nose
feel me then shiver
the tingle down your back
prelude to a sneeze

A bead of sweat that runs
down your chest like a tear
skiing extravagantly across
the powder of your skin before
evaporating in low heat

An itch on the smooth sheen
of your freshly shaven legs
tingling and tempting you
to scratch me with
the sharp edge of a nail

I’m the lax thread that hangs
from your buttoned blouse
caught between your fingers
I feel a fever in your touch
pulled loose from all mooring

I’m the taste on your tongue
Chocolate hot and illicit
a sweet and guilty pleasure
with the bitter hint of unfulfillment
when the aftertaste has gone

I’m the soft downy hair
That grows above your lip
exquisite crop of silk
blown by your breath washed
by the moist swipe of your tongue

I'm a dream one night
an uninvited guest
see me at the margins
where I swim
giddy with my sanguine eye
red hot in my blood

I’m the glint and shimmer
of imagination often
lost inside a reverie
that begins here at the keys and
finishes when you say goodbye

BIO:  I'm 46 years old, and have been writing for about 6-7 years, though only in the last couple of years have I started to take it more seriously. I live in Long Beach, been married for 16 years and have a 13 year old daughter. I grew up in UK, just outside of London, but have been in US for the last 18 years, (outside of a year spent teaching English in Mexico). I also spent a short time living in Spain.
I've had stories, travelogues and some essays published in three ex-pat magazines in Mexico, but that was because I knew the editors. Other than that I've been too lazy to send out stories, so don't really have a bio here in the states.
Favorite authors include - Don DeLillo, Cormac McCarthy, Barbra Kingsolver, Annie Proulx, Ian McKewan (kind of boring and conventional now I see it written down, oh well!!). Hmm? - also Carlos Fuentes, Juan Rulfo, Jeanette Winterson.....okay, that's better."
