About Donald Drury

Donald Drury taught Creative Writing at Long Beach City College for thirty years. He was kind-hearted, truthful, quick-witted, and dauntingly literate. He loved writing and reading and was an absolute sleuth when it came to discovering obscure and wonderful writers, whose works he would bring to classes or share with his interested colleagues. Don was a paradigm of the great teacher and a rare human being. He sponsored many writing endeavors in his long career at the College, and he is greatly missed by those who were fortunate enough to know him. After his death in 1988, family and friends endowed the Donald Drury Award in Creative Writing to honor his years of service and to acknowledge creative writers in the English Department's Creative Writing Courses.
