Art by Jayne Holsinger

For Alternate Non-Flash Gallery

Artist Statement:
I paint primarily in oils and gouache mediums and I use photographic references as a starting point, usually images I have snapped myself. Lately I’ve been interested in the natural environment, particularly at the edge where human activity is evident.

I rely on the processes of painting to transform images into something open the viewer can enter into. To this end, I vary my physical approach to the work in response to the subject: standing to the wall, kneeling on the floor, or sitting at a table to paint. I exercise precise control or allow for accidents that add energy and texture. I invent colors I perceive as emotionally extending the subject. I emphasize perceptual phenomenon like the gushing of water, or how light glitters in spectral dots on a rippled pool.
