Bane of Man
Scenes 6-10

          EXT. COUNTRY ROAD - NIGHT

          Four members of the Gothic Clan run alongside a desolate road. They
          are part of a band of misfits, grotesque and zombie-fied
          by the plague that has killed everyone over the
          age of seventeen.    

          We see the ruins of a modern day city, abandoned homes,
          and vacant business in the background.

          The second in command of the Gothic Clan, JOEY, about
          15, more ambitious than most of the clan, climbs a fence
          on the side of the road.

          Rest of Gothic Clan climb over the fence.

                              JOEY
                         (on top of fence)
                    Remember to be quiet.
                         (climbing down, now inside)
                    I hope the orphans are all asleep now.

          Gothic Clan members laugh and then rattle the fence.

   
          Joey jumps the last few feet down from the fence.

                              JOEY
                         (whispering)
                    I said be quiet!

          Gothic Clan members stop rattling the fence, climb

          the fence and jump down.

                              JOEY
                    Ok, this window will do.

          Joey takes out a glass cutter.

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 1
                    Are you sure this is the right way?

          Joey carefully cuts a square in the window.
 
                              JOEY
                    As sure as your dead mother.

          Joey pushes in the cut glass square.

          Gothic Clan members wince, expecting to hear it shatter.

          There is no sound to be heard. The glass cutout
          landed on a couch below the window.

                          GOTHIC CLAN # 2
                         (shaking his head)
                    Stupid.
                               

                           JOEY
                         (looking through the window)
                    Lucky us, a couch.

          Joey cuts away more of the glass, throws the pieces outside.
         

          INT. SCHOOL/LIBRARY - NIGHT

          We see a modest school library crammed to the brim
          with books, posters, and furniture.

          Gothic Clan members climb through the window. They land on
          the couch below the window.

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 2
                    Never liked reading much.

          Gothic Clan knocks books off their shelves and
          make a mess.

          Books make noise as they hit the floor.

                              JOEY
                    Quiet, you idiots!

          Gothic Clan members freeze.

          Joey puts his finger up to his mouth and shushes
          them.

                              JOEY
                    Remember, be quiet. Follow me. We’re going to
                    the cafeteria.

          Joey goes to the doorway and points down the
          hallway to another room, the cafeteria. 

          Gothic Clan leave the library, go down the hall and through
          cafeteria.
 
          INT. SCHOOL/KITCHEN - NIGHT

          Gothic Clan members enter the kitchen.

          MAIN KITCHEN

                              JOEY
                    Trent said the generator was in here.

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 1
                    It's ok if we trash the place,
                    right?

          Not waiting for an answer, Gothic Clan begins
          knocking things over and making a mess.

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 2
                         (picking up a toaster)
                    It has been a long time since I've had
                    toast. I miss toaster strudel.
                    That was so good.

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 3
                    Pillsbury.

                              JOEY
                    You guys are idiots. Just find the
                    generator. It shouldn't be that hard to find.
                    It's big and noisy.

          Gothic Clan # 2 puts down the toaster.

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 2
                         (points to toaster)
                    I'll be back for you.

                              JOEY
                    Remember, keep it quiet.

          BACK OF KITCHEN

          Richard and Alan are lurking in the back of the
          kitchen behind some folded up tables and
          equipment. They are wearing black, light-weight,
          hooded zip-up sweat shirts.

                              ALAN
                         (whispering)
                    Ok, now is our chance.

                              RICHARD
                         (whispering)
                    To do what?
 
                              ALAN
                         (whispering)
                    Two against four, not bad odds.

                              RICHARD
                    But you have me on your team.

                              ALAN
                    That’s true.

          Richard shakes his head.

          Richard peeks at Gothic Clan from behind
          the table.

          We see Gothic Clan trashing the kitchen.

                              RICHARD
                         (whispering)
                    My god I know what they're doing.
                    They're going to steal our generator.

                              ALAN
                    We've got to warn Kelly.
                   
                              RICHARD
                         (whispering)
                    They're not very quiet. Kelly must have
              heard them already.

                              ALAN
                    Here, take the taser gun and one of these
                    smoke grenades.

                              RICHARD
                         (whispering)
                    Why?

                              ALAN
                         (peeking at Gothic Clan)
                    We’ll get them when they leave, it will be
                    our best chance.

          MAIN KITCHEN

          Joey finds the gas powered generator on the far
          side of the kitchen and directs two of the clan members
          to stop messing up the kitchen and pick it up.

                              JOEY
                    We’ve got it!

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 1
                    Now we can leave.

                              JOEY
                    We’ll go through the courtyard and along
                    the fence to the gate and kick it open.
                    It's the best way out.

          Gothic Clan leave.

          EXT. SCHOOL/COURTYARD - NIGHT

          Gothic Clan members run through the court yard to the
          fence.

          SCHOOL ROOFTOP

          We see Richard and Alan up on the roof. They wait until
          Most of Gothic Clan are under them and then throw
          the smoke bombs.

          BACK ON THE GROUND

          SUDDENLY, a smoke bomb, breaks in front of Gothic Clan,
          filling the air with smoke.

                              JOEY
                    What the—?

         
                              RICHARD
                         (from the roof)
                    Drop the generator!

          Richard and Alan jump from the roof.

          
                              JOEY
                         (looking up)
                    Huh?

     
          Richard tackles Joey.

                              JOEY
                    You idiot!

          Richard puts Joey into a choke hold.

                              RICHARD
                    It’s ours!

          Alan attacks GOTHIC CLAN member # 1, who is protecting
          The other two carrying the generator.
                  

                              JOEY
                         (struggling)
                    No problem here.

          Joey elbows Richard in the chest. 

          Richard grunts in pain.

          Richard turns on the taser gun and holds it to
          Joey's face.

                              JOEY
                    Point that thing somewhere else.

                              RICHARD
                    Not until they drop our generator.

          Joey grabs the taser gun handle and holds it away
          from his face.

          Joey and Richard both fight for control of the
          gun.
 
          Meanwhile Alan wrestles with Gothic Clan #1. While the
          Other two watch.

          Joey elbows Richard.

         
                              JOEY
                         (elbowing Richard again)
                    Not a chance.

          Richard grunts in pain and lets go of Joey.

          Joey gets up, brushes himself off, adjusts his
          nose piercing, and kicks Richard in the chest.

          Richard drops the taser gun and moans in pain.

          Alan is held down on the ground by Gothic Clan #1
 
                              JOEY
                    Keep reading. You’re better at it.

          Gothic Clan members laugh.

                              RICHARD
                         (holding chest)
                    Ok, Joey, I will.

                              JOEY
                    You’re lucky. I have to go.

          Gothic Clan members leave through the school courtyard
          to the fence.

                              GOTHIC CLAN #1
                         (running)
                    See-ya suckers!

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 2
                         (carrying generator with #3)
                    Taxation without representation!

          Gothic Clan members laugh again.

          FENCE

They move quickly along fence to gate. Joey and #1 kick locked gate open to get generator through

          Gothic Clan move quickly into the forest.

          EXT. FOREST - NIGHT

          The forest is thick with vegetation. Animal noises are heard.
         
          Joey is limping, a result of his fight with
          Richard.

          Gothic Clan are several yards into the forest when they
          hear a loud SNAP.

          The quiet laughter of Children comes from
          all around.

          Gothic Clan hesitate to slow down but Joey
          signals for them to stop.
 
                              JOEY
                    Wait guys, hold on. I hear something

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 2
                    You mean the animals? Or like Richard
                    and Alan?

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 1
                    Oh shit, they're on to us! Aren't they?
                    They're after us!

                              JOEY
                    No wait. It's something else. Wait, be
                    quiet.

          TREES ABOVE

          We see Children hiding in tree branches above
          Gothic Clan.

                              CHILD # 1
                             (to others in the trees)
                    Not yet.

          FOREST FLOOR

          Gothic Clan members look around, but not up.

          Joey is startled by a sound above him.

          It sounds like a child laughing.

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 3
                    What is that?

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 2
                    It sounds like a little girl.

          Joey shushes them one more time.

                              CHILD'S VOICE
                    Wait.

          A tree branch breaks again.

          Joey looks up into the trees.

                              JOEY
                    What is up there?

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 1
                         (looking up)
                    What up where?

          Gothic Clan members see the faint outlines of Children
          hiding up in the trees.
 
                              GOTHIC CLAN # 3
                    How did they get up there?

                              JOEY
                    They climbed, stupid.

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 2
                    It’s downright creepy.

                              JOEY
                         (starting to run)
                    Shut-up and run!

          Joey trips and falls.

                              JOEY
                         (standing up)
                    Run you idiots!

                              CHILD'S VOICE
                    Now!

          Suddenly, Children jump down from the trees and attack
          the Gothic Clan.

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 1
                    An ambush!

           Children attack Gothic Clan #1, four on one. 

          He screams in terror.

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 1
                         (still standing)
                    Get them off! Get them off!

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 2
                         (teary eyed, on the ground)
                    Why are they doing this?

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 3
                         (face smashed into the ground)
                    We just needed another generator.

           The generator is on the ground.

                              JOEY
                         (fending them away)
                    Shut-up! Get them off! Keep them away
                    from the generator!
 
          Gothic Clan are all pinned to the ground and
          yelling in pain.

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 1
                         (pinned, fighting the Children off)
                    Get them off!

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 2
                         (pinned, fighting the Children off,
                         crying)
                    I can't!

         
                              JOEY
                    Dammit!

          Suddenly, at least a dozen children gather around
          the generator, pick it up and move towards the school.

                              CHILD # 1
                         (looks over her shoulder)
                    Think you can bully us, do you?

          Children take the generator through the broken gate.

                              JOEY
                         (belly down on the ground, with 3
                         children jumping on his back)
                    Freaking bastards.

          The other Children stay, keeping the intruders
          pinned.

          Children jump off and scamper into the woods.

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 2
                         (drying eyes)
                    They're gone, tell me they’re gone.

          Gothic Clan members stand up.

          Children return with sticks

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 1
                    They're not gone.

          Children surround Gothic Clan.

          Children start hitting Gothic Clan with sticks,
          slowly at first, testing them, playing with them.
 
          Gothic Clan members do their best to fend them off and
          protect themselves, but they are outnumbered.

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 1
                    Are they going to kill us?

                              KELLY
                    Stop!

          We see Kelly, not far away, on the other side of
          the fence, in the school courtyard.

          Children stop fighting and look up at Kelly.

          FENCE

          Kelly appears from the inside the school courtyard
          and walks up to the fence. The moonlight shines
          off her hair, she is beautiful.

          Alan and Richard stand behind her like body guards, holding
          old baseball bats.

                              ALAN
                          (raising his voice to Children)
                    Go back to bed!

          FOREST

          Children scamper back to the school.

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 1
                    Come on, let’s go.

          Rest of Gothic Clan run off, but Joey stays.

                              GOTHIC CLAN # 2 (calling back)
                    Come on Joey.

                              JOEY
                         (flicking Kelly off)
                    Savages!

          Joey gives them the finger, then runs off.

                    FENCE

          The sounds of the Gothic Clan in the forest fades away.
 
                              ALAN
                    We need more protection. Me and Richard
                    can't do it all.

                              RICHARD
                    He’s right.

                              KELLY
                    What's important is that the children are unharmed.

                              ALAN
                    For now. But you should move somewhere
                    safer.

                              KELLY
                    Katelyn has an idea, what about
                    the stadium?

                              ALAN
                         (thinking)
                    That could work. It’s all walled in.

         
                              KELLY
                    Do you think they'll come back?

                              RICHARD
                    Not now.

                              KELLY
                    Well you should still follow them, to
                    make sure.

                              RICHARD (Looking at Alan)
                    Ok, we will. See you tomorrow Kelly.

          Alan and Richard leave through the woods.

                              KELLY
                         (to herself)
                    Be careful you two.

          Child # 1 enters the court yard and walks up to
          the fence. Kelly turns to Child # 1.

                              KELLY
                    Who's there? Oh it’s you. Hello there.
                    What are you doing up?

                              CHILD # 1
                    We stopped them Kelly. They ran away.
 

                              KELLY
                    I know sweetie. But you must swear never
                    to do that again.

                              CHILD # 1
                    But.

                              KELLY
                    No.

          Child # 1 looks sad.

          Kelly hugs Child # 1.

                              KELLY
                         (hugging)
                    When they come next time, you have to
                    promise to hide, ok?

                              CHILD # 1
                         (hugging)
                    Ok.

          We see Child # 1 has her fingers crossed behind
          her back.
