Poetry by Bob Zappacosta

Channel 27

The fat dog smiles

as a rabbit with a broken leg
comes into his sight.

The fat dog smiles

knowing
at the end of the day
he’ll only be getting

fatter.

Smell the
heat of summer.
It’s in the eyes of

everyone

strolling down
Main Street past the
candlepin

bowling alley

to the other side
of paradise.
And all along

the way

the shopkeepers
are merchandising
their wares.

An ice cream

cone
screams
Lick me!

dripping

strawberry, vanilla.
Big tollhouse
cookies

speak

in a more subtle way
next to a pitcher of

ice cold lemonade.

These are
the dog-days
of summer.

Fill your pockets

for winter
will surely
come.
